9 - Look through past Christmas movies and pictures
10 - Watch "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" while enjoying grinch punch.
11 - Make ice globes
12 - Go watch the Junior Theater plays
13 - Go to Gigi's Playhouse Christmas Open House
14 - Decorate Christmas sugar cookies at Grandma's with cousins

Carter's ART project

This year for Christmas we kept it very simple and tried to help the kids understand that all the advent calendar things we did together and our vacation to San Antonio was all part of Christmas.  Carter really did understand and appreciate the importance of time together rather than material things.  For Christmas Carter received a metal detector (his number 1 want on his list), a long-sleeved armor all shirt, and alarm clock/ iphone dock.
Lanie received Daniel Tiger's treehouse, Elsa from Frozen doll that sings, and a couple puzzles.  Together they got the game Labrynth.

We went to Tanya and John's house for New Year's Eve and got to spend time catching up with friends while the kids played.  It's nice to be with the kids that night.  The kids rang in the new year with a glass of juice at about 10:30 with us.

The Most Important Things About San Antonio

Matthew and I discussed and decided quickly on this winter vacation over a few adult drinks and after a stressful week.  We had less than 4 weeks to plan, which is definitely not enough for the amount of detail my husband likes to put into it, but it worked.  I really wish it had been warmer when we were there, but then I stepped back onto Iowa soil, and I quickly remembered what "cold" really feels like:)  One day driving back to our house in the rental car, we began a "most important thing" list based on The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown. Here is our rendition.

The most important thing about San Antonio is you can get delicious Mexican food at a different restaurant on every street.  Nichas Comita Mexicana has amazing strawberry margaritas!  At The Market there's Mi Tierra Cafe and Mariachi Bar lit up beautifully for Christmas.  But the most important thing about San Antonio is you can get delicious Mexican food at a different restaurant on every street.

The most important thing about San Antonio is there is a river running down the middle of the city.  We walked the river walk both during the day and night with the kids, anxious that they were going to fall in!  Dozens of restaurants lined the river walk.  One night we ate at Rainforest Cafe so that we could see the lights along the riverwalk at night too.  But the most important thing about San Antonio is there is a river running down the middle of the city.

The most important thing about San Antonio is the missions.  We bought an Alamo Hop On and Off trolley pass and got out to see both the mission Alamo and mission San Jose.  San Jose was actually a lot bigger and prettier.  Learned a lot of interesting history at the missions and from our bus driver. The trolley also took us to the Hemisphere Park and we went up the Tower of the Americas, we got out at The Market to have lunch and also walked around looking for souveniers.  But the most important thing about San Antonio is the missions.

The most important thing about San Antonio is it has beautiful city parks.  Matthew surprised me Sunday with a plan to visit city parks with the kids and the first park had a trail I could run on.  It was about 50 degrees out and while I ran, the kids played on the playground.  Then we headed to a Japanese Tea Garden park.  Matthew and I both enjoy looking for different flora and fauna than we find in Iowa:)  But the most important thing about San Antonio is the beautiful city parks.

The most important thing about San Antonio is it has Cheesy Jane's.  One of the days we went to Witte Museum and for lunch Matthew had read online about a little cafe.  We shared milkshakes and had awesome sandwiches and onion rings.  Definitely best food we had in San Antonio.  But the most important thing about San Antonio is it has Cheesy Jane's.

The most important thing about San Antonio is Mark and Molly's house.  This was our first Air B&B experience.  Molly accepted our offer to stay in her 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom house and we were excited to try it out.  It was so nice having a full kitchen to cook in, deck to relax on after walking all day, and a living room to stretch out and play games with the kids at night.  But the most important thing about San Antonio is Mark and Molly's house.

The most important thing about San Antonio is it has Morgan's Wonderland.  Morgan's Wonderland is explained as "an accessible family fun park for families both with and without special needs."  It was a really nice place, with great playgrounds, petting zoo, train ride, fishing, carousel and light garden show.  People with all kinds of needs were enjoying the park.  But the most important thing about San Antonio is it has Morgan's Wonderland.

The most important thing about San Antonio is the zoo.  Our very last day in San Antonio we enjoyed the zoo.  It was great sweatshirt weather and the sun was shining bright.  Carter's favorite was the reptile house.  Lanie, Matthew and I enjoyed the monkeys, like always.  The zoo was pretty large and it took us almost 4 hours to get through it all.  But the most important thing about San Antonio is the zoo.

The most important thing about San Antonio is it has a Ripley's Believe It or Not and Guinness Book of World Records.  This was Carter's day.  He was very excited to walk through these 2 places.  He also got to go on a 4-D ride with both Matthew and I separately.  There was lots of interesting information to read and see.  But the most important thing about San Antonio is it has a Ripley's Believe It or Not and Guinness Book of World Records.

The most important thing about San Antonio was time spent together as a family.  This was the kids' second airplane ride, not sure they remember their first.  They did amazing on the planes and at the airports.  Back at the house at night we played Skip-Bo, Garbage, Farkle, and watched movies.  It was so nice to not have any house cleaning or work to do.  The most important thing about San Antonio was time spent together as a family.

November 2014 Happenings

We had fun looking and making things we needed for this year's couple's costume, Mary Poppins and Bert.  We even won the contest!:)

Lanie's girl scout troop visited Iowa State's Workshop 2 Sundays to learn how to make their own pottery.  They each got to make a bowl and a piece of art for the wall.

Lanie's teachers this year are again wonderful!  They both advocate for Lanie and care for her deeply.  Lanie did an awesome job at her student-led conference, telling Daddy and I all that she is doing in school.  Math continues to be her favorite, even though it is the most difficult for her.

Our PE teacher worked really hard to get grants and monies to buy our school a rock climbing wall.  I can't imagine how much Lanie loves this!

Girls' night out in Kansas City.  Nicole had won tickets to a country bar concert featuring Josh Thompson and Jana Kramer and invited me to come visit her.  It was great to have time to catch up with her at her house and Mindy in the 4 hour car ride.

Happy 62nd birthday Daddy and 33rd birthday Shannon!  Love you to the moon and back!
Carter's habitat project that was completed by Carter and Daddy when I was out of town.  I love how Carter took the initiative to do a you tube search for how to build the igloo on his own!  Then he thought of adding the background, inuit people, and dogsled.

Hair cut time!!  Lanie before . . .     and after:)  No more tears in the morning!

Carter before . . . and after:)  Val from Dancing with the Stars was his inspiration.

It was so sad to realize that Carter was no longer a part of Harvest Gathering at the Elementary School.  I missed dressing both kids up and both kids being excited to perform.  Lanie sang and wrote a verse with the girls in the picture about a place in our town, "The kids at the Aquatic Center laugh and splash, laugh and splash, laugh and splash, the kids at the Aquatic Center laugh and splash all through Nevada." She also had an individual speaking part about owls with her own class and then sang two whole group songs, We All Live Together and With Our Own Two Hands.

The kids and I spent Thanksgiving Day with Mindy and Aiden while Matthew worked.  We had a nice size meal for the kids including ham, mac and cheese, green bean casserole, homemade bread, mashed potatoes and cherry cheesecake.  The kids played all afternoon while Mindy and I talked and then we took the kids to Big Hero 6 at Jordan Creek.  Thankful for friends to be with on Thanksgiving:)
