February 2021 Happenings

Well, a pretty unexciting beginning to a month to a very crazy, scary end of month.  Lanie and I both started back in building 2nd semester and things seemed to be going well.  Lanie is loving her mornings with Lucy (and we are too).  She is happy and there does not seem to be a struggle to get her to do things.  It's good to get her out of the house and around people for at least half the day.  Carter has been working 20 - 30 hours each week at Subway, mostly in campus town now.

We planned a family get away for the long weekend after Parent/ Teacher conferences with Lynchs.  It seemed like it would also be a great way to celebrate me getting my first vaccine on Thursday, February 18.  We went skiing, and Carter and Lanie also tubed, at Buck Hill on Friday.  When we got there it was quite chilly at about 16 degrees, but the lady behind the ticket counter was right when she said that it would be perfect weather for skiing.  Once we got moving, we were warm and toasty.  Matthew and I were amazed that we could still ski and Carter has improved SO much.  Lanie lasted longer than she did 10 years ago but was not enjoying it.  Our bodies were exhausted for days after:). The rest of the weekend we hung out at the cabin relaxing, walking out on the frozen lake and playing lots of games.  Lots of laughs and smiles.  It was a treacherous drive home, as that weekend always seems to be, with at least 6 inches of snow and wind but we made it.

When we got back to town, we unpacked and then headed to Mom's house for Kaelan's 18th birthday.  Unbelieveable.  Except for a little arguing at the beginning, it was a nice time. Mom made ham and turkey and lots more yummy food and Kaelan seemed happy.

Then came the end of February.  A few days after getting back from the cabin I began to have a little tickle in my throat.  Then the cough kept me up at night for a few nights.  I became hoarse at school for a day or two.  Then it moved to my sinuses.  Meanwhile I also had 3 canker sores in my mouth from too much pineapple and cranberry juice at the cabin.  Honestly, I didn't think there was anyway it could be Covid.  I never had a fever and I was able to work out every single day, that couldn't be Covid right?  Friday night I went to bed at 7pm thinking, I need to rest my body from this bad cold and when I wake up I'll feel all better.  Then Saturday I took a nap every 3 hours and still went back to bed at 7pm.  I also noticed at this point that maybe I wasn't tasting things very well (but again, that's what happens with a cold right)? I also noticed I was winded from coming up the stairs.  I DID call First Nurse Saturday and they also put me through to the respiratory clinic, but nothing seemed urgent and I thought, no way.  Sunday night, I got a call from Carter's vice principal saying that Carter was exposed to Covid at weightlifting on Thursday, which I didn't know he had been going to.  At this point was when I thought, oh my gosh, this could be real. I put on a mask and began physical distancing from the family. . . of course too little too late.  We called Carter from work to come home and he was quarantined to his room and wore a mask from then on.  I called Dr. Rathe on Monday to find out about setting up a testing time for Carter (school required it to be at least 5 days from exposure) and then also talked about my symptoms.  I got my test at 2:40pm on Monday and by Tuesday at 3:30pm the results came back Positive.  It was unreal.  At that point my world began to crash down.  All the signs were there, I just wouldn't listen.  All the people I put at risk and now I had to tell them.    I began the long list of texts of warning and apologizing.  So now here I sit.  It's Thursday (I think) March 4, 2021.  Carter's test came back negative but that would have been from the weightlifting exposure, too early for mine.  I've been in my bedroom since Tuesdays results, made Matthew quit kissing me and sleeping with me since Sunday.  Matthew and Lanie have their Covid tests scheduled for tomorrow at 9am (waiting as long as possible for it to incubate).  No one that I've exposed has had any symptoms, thank goodness.  I can go back to school on Monday, March 8 and then a week later it will be spring break.  Just hoping I don't get anyone sick by the end of this.
